Trauma Informed Congregations - A Strategy Document

Dale Fletcher ·
Hi Folks, I have recently been trained as an ACE Master Trainer through the Children's Trust of South Carolina . In the training we received materials from ACE Interface . My special interest is working with churches and ministries to educate and equip them to be better trauma-informed and to increase the resilience of members of their congregation and of the communities members they serve. Myself and another Master Trainer have presented information on ACEs to a small group of people at a...

Worth Forwarding - "Caught between the Amygdala and a Hard Place" - by Karyn Purvis, Ph.D. & David Cross, Ph.D.

Steven Dahl ·
As so many disturbing and traumatic events involving children have been covered by the media recently - it caused me to reflect on my own journey of becoming trauma-informed. Now that I know what I know, I cannot view such stories in a trauma- un informed way. I've found myself in discussions with others who may, or may not be, trauma-informed. It turns out this one factor predictably correlates with the type of conversation that ensues around any topic covered by the media where children...

Examples of churches, temples, synagogues, mosques, and other faith communities practicing child trauma prevention and intervention?

Laura Norton-Cruz ·
Hello, I just joined this group because, as the coordinator for a statewide trauma-prevention, resilience-promoting coalition in Alaska, I am working with the Governor's Office to organize a forum for faith leaders on the topic of "Safe Children, Healthy Families." I am going to give a presentation to the faith leaders and others assembled and then they will engage in a conversation about what they can do -- with children and youth, with parents and caregivers, with leadership and...

Getting FBOs involved in the ACEs Conversation/Movement

Steven Morris ·
Hello everyone. I'm from Arkansas and the work with ACEs is just getting off the ground here. We have a workgroup with about 100 organizations involved and they are sharing the data about ACEs nationally and in AR--The last ACEs study showed Arkansas has the highest frequency of people experiencing multiple ACEs. I've seen how FBOs have taken responsibility and a leadership roles in other states and believe that can happen here too. We are a highly religious state and medical collages have...

Healing the Inner Child, part 3

Please help us engage people in the critical conversation about mental health and substance use disorder parity. President Obama created the Mental Health and Substance Use Disorder Parity Task Force in March 2016 to focus key federal agencies on ensuring that Americans receive the coverage and treatment they need. Re: Anyone working on Jewish approaches to ACEs and Resilience?

Antonio Clinkscales ·
Hi LauraLee and thanks for reaching out. From years of study and application from my own personal journey and battles, I use the holy scriptures from their Hebraic root interpretation according to Yah commands to teach about healing and resiliency; which is not a Jewish or any other religious message but simple a divine truth for all of His creation - it's for everyone who believes. The heavenly Father doesn't hide His plan to recovery from past hurts from His children, learning to trust in...

Thank you for your prompt reply. I have my own journey that took me to the Hebraic Roots of His Word. I have worked as a substance abuse counselor and have attended 12 step meetings for many years due to my own addictions. I found the ACE study through working as a TRIAD Women's Project case manager. I would love to converse further with you on how to reach the Messianic Community. Yah has put me on Hebrew Nations Radio Online. My program is called Healing for the Nations with A Modern Day...

Hi Marilyn, I'm new to the ACEs Connect and wanted to respond to your request. I'm developing a spiritual based approach to ACEs through a messianic message. I have not published anything yet because I'm still receiving from the Most High and working with a small group using the spiritual strategies to healing physically and mentally before releasing it publicly. If you're interested, I would love to continue the conversation.

Hi Dale! It did not happen. A volunteer staff person had a bit of a meltdown and is, quite frankly, is choosing to not see ACES as causation. She was unwilling to hear any of what she calls, "excuses". There was an ugly confrontation in a meeting.....Anyway, that is being dealt with but after that explosion, we decided to hold on presenting to the entire congregation, and I will now focus on developing a 4-6 week curriculum for our participants. I'm evaluating which games to order from CRI...

Re: Child abuse can be found in every culture and religion

JoNaia Gill ·
Not just in every cutlture and religon Dave, but in homes, streets, public view, schools every where. Child abuse can be found anywhere and everywhere. I agree we must teach every religious leader as well as the entire public the damaging effects of child abuse. The only effect of keeping it quiet is a bad life long outcome, with decisions, perceptions, betrayls from trusting yet again as an adult. My experience my body grew, but my mind remained a child, well thats just from my experience.

I agree with you, Chris! There are so very many people hurting that the generic sermons just don't reach them. We have to get out and serve the hurting people like Jesus did. We started a ministry that we are waiting for 501c3 status for, called Lapeer P.E.A.R.L.S. (Prevent. Educate. Advocate. Restore. Love. Support) that is faith based, using Matthew 18:10 Beware that you don't look down on any of these little ones. For I tell you that in heaven their angels are always in the presence of my...

Chris, I understand what you are saying. My expertise is in ministering children from divorce and single parent homes. For years I ran a therapeutic child care in OK. I had no church to send these families to because churches just didn't understand what was needed. Parents would say, "why should I go to church? I just get called out to deal with my own child so I might as well stay home." Thankfully more and more special needs ministries are cropping up now. However, church leaders and...

Lauralee, Thanks for reaching out. Happy to hear from you. Check my website: aceovercomers.org We now have online facilitator training. The first session (one of twelve) is free. There is a difference between establishing a safe culture in a church and just adding a new class to the list of available classes. Establishing a safe culture requires the pastor and leadership to "buy into" understanding and practicing trauma-informed approach to ministry. I'm not saying that the pastor must...

Dear Dale, This looks very good. Raising awareness about the long-term effects of abuse (which eliminates the minimizing of an incident should it occur) and equipping the leadership and the members of the congregation with ways to prevent abuse are tangible ways to empower people to make appropriate responses should it occur. I especially like point 4c about sermons and Bible studies that explore this topic . It has to be brought out into the open! With my best, Dianne Darr Couts Survivor,...
