PACEs in the Faith-Based Community

Good Evening, Everyone!

I'm in the beginning stages of prep for a Sunday morning presentation in October where I am tasked with giving a very concise yet educational talk on ACES.  This will be the first-time introduction for our church family, and as we house and run a significant ministry to struggling (in every way)  families , it is imperative we start to help our congregation become trauma-informed.  The mindset is often, "we lead you to the Lord, now move on", and the frustration among volunteers is "why do they keep doing the same destructive things over and over?"

So, my question is, given I have only about 10 minutes, what would you suggest I target?

Thanks!

Cyndi

Hi Cyndi, I appreciate that you're doing this for your church!  I recently created a more complete presentation on ACES from a biblical perspective. I used slides from ACE Interface and added several of my own that were related to scriptural principles and our shared Christian faith. If it would help I could share more with you.  In Christ,  Dale

Hi Dale!

It did not happen.  A volunteer staff person had a bit of a meltdown and is, quite frankly, is choosing to not see ACES as causation.  She was unwilling to hear any of what she calls, "excuses".  There was an ugly confrontation in a meeting.....Anyway, that is being dealt with but after that explosion, we decided to hold on presenting to the entire congregation, and I will now focus on developing a 4-6 week curriculum for our participants.

I'm evaluating which games to order from CRI and open to any curriculum that are already out there.  I don't need to reinvent the wheel, but the goal will be to educated women on what ACES are, how they are effected by them today, and then get to resilience and cycle breaking so their children don't suffer the same with Biblical standards mixed in.

Thanks!
Cyndi

Hi Dale,

I would love to connect with you. I am a ACE's Child Advocate at a DV/SA support center. My role is to educate those in the community and trying to implement sustainable programming. My next steps is to reach out to the faith based communities. I would love to see your presentation as well as any information or resources you have that would be helpful. Thank you so much. I hope we can connect!

Hi Dale, thank you so much for sharing your PowerPoint.  I have been talking to my pastor and church and I am preparing to help my church become trauma-informed. I'm creating resources online, so would appreciate anything ya'll have gathered.

Thanks, Beth@moorewellness.life

P.S. I saw your question about neuroplasticity and I have some information if you'd like to use any of it for future teachings.

Brain Plasticity Neural Growth

  • Derives from exposure to new experiences and stimuli
  • Allows for reparative experiences
  • Promoted by counseling interventions
  • Neuroplasticity occurs across one’s lifespan
  • Rapid rates from ages 0-6
  • While a child is young the foundation for neural pathways are formed and lay the ground work for future functions
  • Play and social relationships are necessary for healthy brain development

(Wheeler and Dillman, 2016)

  • Until recently, scientists believed that brain development came to a halt during adulthood. But experts now know that our brains change constantly throughout our lives, forming new pathways to adjust to changes in our environment, actions, thinking and emotions.
  • Neural plasticity, the change in neural connectivity induced by experience, may be the fundamental way in which psychotherapy alters the brain.
