HOPE at the National Convening of EndCAN [positiveexperience.org/category/blog]

By Dr. Bob Sege, 8/25/22, https://positiveexperience.org/category/blog/

The HOPE – Healthy Outcomes from Positive Experiences – framework adds insights to the prevention and treatment of child abuse and neglect. This link between HOPE and child abuse and neglect prevention was celebrated last month at a national convening of EndCAN. The goal of the one day meeting of national experts and stakeholders was to create a communications plan to decrease child abuse and neglect. The group broadly endorsed the importance of positive childhood experiences. The HOPE framework will be an integral part of the EndCAN campaign.

Christina Bethell and I, HOPE Director Dr. Sege, received the 2022 Richard Krugman award for our work identifying the importance of positive childhood experiences. We accepted this award together at an informal dinner. When citing our work, Dr. Krugman commented that Dr. Bethell and I had established the importance of positive childhood experiences and opened the field of adverse child experiences and trauma informed care to include positive, as well as adverse, childhood experiences.

Thank you, Bob. Here in NZ we currently have the Royal Commission Inquiry into the abuse of children and youth by our State institutions from 1950 to 1999

I have attended the last  hearings which cover the state institutional responses.

Sadly, some of our key state agencies continue to allow our children and youth to be abused today whilst under their care particularly Ministry for Children, Oranga Tamariki and Ministry of Education.

Children and youth placed in secure residences managed by the Ministry for Children face liberal use of restraint and seclusion.

Our Office of the Children's Commission has raised their concerns and presented their data on the excessive use of restraints and seclusion on our children whilst under the care of the Ministry for Children.

The problem the OCC has limited funding and limited powers to do anything more than to report and try to influence the leaders of the Ministry for Children and our policymakers and lawmakers to do the right thing for all our children.

How do we change the mindsets of our leaders to take action to make transformational change for our children?

All I can do is to raise awareness and HOPE that our leaders and policymakers read articles like yours

Your work can influence those in power.

Thank you for all you do.
