On Monday night the Hutchinson Public Schools board of education approved a resolution in support of the district being trauma informed. The board voted 7-0 to "support the training and implementation activities currently addressing the trauma-informed schools’ philosophy and commend the entire staff as they move toward creating this environment in USD 308." Ahead of the resolution, four elementary teachers presented information gleaned from the November Trauma Informed Schools Conference held in St. Louis. The teachers followed a PowerPoint they created for use with the teachers in their home schools. The board learned about compassion fatigue, brain breaks and the difficulty of the mind shifts these teachers were needing to make as implemented their trauma informed practices. The board also learned these teachers believe trauma informed "is who we are".
Educating people in Hutchinson about Adverse Childhood Experiences and the effects of toxic stress. The goal is for the community to integrate trauma-informed and resilience-building practices into individual, family, work, and community lives.
