The Iowa ACEs Advocacy Coalition has worked diligently all session to promote legislation that will improve the well-being of children and families in Iowa. In partnership with advocates around the state, the coalition is currently promoting a few key items to be included in the final draft of the Health and Human Services appropriations bill currently in conference committee:
- $3.3 million to expand 1st Five Healthy Mental Development Initiative: The 1st Five Initiative supports the healthy mental development of young children and promotes early identification and intervention—connecting children and families to the right resources at the right time.
- Creation of the Children's Mental Health and Well-Being Work Group: The Children’s Mental Health and Well-Being work group represents an important step forward in improving children’s services in Iowa. This multi-agency workgroup would be charged with the development of a comprehensive, multi-disciplinary system of care for children.
- Increase eligibility for childcare assistance from 145% to 160% FPL: Increasing access to affordable child care would help address one of the biggest barriers working Iowa families with young children face as they seek to get their children off to a good start while themselves pursuing jobs and careers.
We will keep everyone updated on the progress of these priorities. Thank you to all of the advocates that have partnered on these efforts!
