Trauma, poverty damaging to kids, doctor says

Dr. Dipesh NavsariaTraumatic experiences and poverty can damage young children’s brains just as surely as lead poisoning can, a national expert said Monday in Des Moines.

Scientists increasingly understand that children’s brain growth can be stunted by a lack of stimulation and by childhood traumas, such as violence and sexual abuse, said Dr. Dipesh Navsaria, a pediatrician and expert on child development at the University of Wisconsin-Madison....

...The Wisconsin expert spoke to nearly 800 educators and social service workers during a daylong conference sponsored by several groups, including Des Moines University, UnityPoint Health and AMOS.

Dr. Navsaria spoke at the Developing Brain, Developing Accountability conference. Former Lincoln High School (Walla Walla, WA) principal Jim Sporleder was scheduled to speak, as well.
