The Coastal Coalition for Substance Awareness & Prevention (NC)

We are a trauma-informed collaborative striving to create safe and stable environments through nurturing relationships to cultivate resilience by raising awareness of adversity, stress, and trauma, working across sectors to provide the tools, skills, resources, and support for community members to build positive childhood experiences and create a community where all can thrive.

Kellin Foundation Issues Plan for Building a ‘Resilient NC’

The science in clear. Resiliency is built – and communities play a key role in promoting safe, secure and nurturing environments where all residents can thrive.

Like many states, there has been a lot of momentum in North Carolina to develop initiatives addressing trauma and resilience. But how can agencies, service providers, and other organizations leverage that momentum and align this work across systems to holistically address the needs of community members across their lifespans?

The Greensboro, North Carolina-based nonprofit Kellin Foundation recently published a report aiming to achieve that goal. “Resilient NC: Supporting Statewide Efforts to Building Community Resilience” offers a set of eight initial strategies for building community resilience based on an extensive scan of efforts nationwide and across the state.

Kellin Foundation Executive Director Dr. Kelly Graves will be presenting the work January 7 at Building the Movement with Coalitions’ first workshop in its “Building the Movement to Prevent Trauma and Foster Resilience” workshop series. Register to reserve your spot.

Kellin Foundation researchers interviewed nearly 40 key leaders in the field to develop these strategies, which are intended to be planned and executed using a science-based, trauma-responsive, and equity focused approach.

The strategies include developing foundation values that will guide the collective efforts, expanding public awareness through strategic communications, and identifying an agency or team that will drive the work.

Other strategies include building partnerships to fund and facilitate the work, developing training and technical assistance, and advocating for trauma-informed care policies.

Graves has presented the work to North Carolina policy makers, community resiliency organizations, and the NC Chief Justice’s Task Force on ACES-Informed Courts.
