A Two-Day Forum for Community Teams
Neighborhood and community-based teams: Join us for a two-day forum dedicated to building communities that care for young children on April 27-28, 2015 at the California Endowment near downtown Los Angeles.

- Dean Marilyn L. Flynn, MSW, PhD – USC School of Social Work
- Sacha Klein, PhD, MSW – Michigan State University
- Mona M. Delahooke, PhD, CA endorsed RPM - The Profectum Foundation
- Beth Sauerhaft, MEd, CPC – Alameda County Health Care Services
Meaningful Takeaways
The Project ABC Forum’s goal is to help communities and individuals work more collaboratively and effectively with young children and families who are involved in or who are at risk of involvement in the child welfare system. You’ll be taken on a journey that connects brain science on the effects of trauma to attachment and the importance of strengthening families, and on to developing community-based systems of care to work in conjunction with DCFS to promote well-being, prevent abuse, and intervene early when problems arise.
You and your team will leave the Forum with a plan tailored to your community and partners for:
- Improving practice
- Staying connected
- Engaging families in meaningful partnership for systems change
- Working in collaboration across sectors to promote child well-being
Who should attend?
TEAMS who serve families with young children in Los Angeles county neighborhoods and communities are invited to attend this special forum dedicated to strengthening cross-sector teamwork, supporting effective resident and family engagement, and building responsive systems that care. Cross-sector teams can include existing and new collaborative efforts. Team members can include frontline staff and supervisors representing early care and education, health care, child welfare, mental health, early intervention and other organizations. Project ABC can assist teams with recruiting partners from other sectors as needed.
FAMILY REPRESENTATIVES: We encourage the inclusion of parents and family representatives on all forum teams, and invite them to attend FREE of charge.
Parent participation brings a wealth of practical experience to the discussion and helps to ensure the voices of family and loved ones are heard. Including family representatives as team members helps to fulfill SAMHSA’s vision of family-driven care on all levels — individual, program and systems. Teams will explore strategies for engaging providers and families in jointly developing training, tools, practices and policies that are family-driven and culturally and linguistically responsive. A pre-forum session will help family representatives get the most out of the two-day experience.
WHY ATTEND?
On the first day of the forum, you’ll learn:
- The role that relationships play in mediating toxic stress in families with young children

- Steps you can take in joining a transformational initiative to create communities that care
On the second day, you’ll:
- Explore the co-learning approach to engaging providers and family members in jointly developing training, tools, practices and policies that are family-driven and culturally and linguistically responsive.
