This program is solely for professional development and is not intended as an intervention for those who have experienced trauma. Please keep in mind talking about trauma, even in the context of professional training can be triggering.
You may have heard (or experienced yourself) that yoga is good for anxiety, depression, addiction and a host of other challenges. However, a person experiencing trauma symptoms may not benefit from a traditional yoga class being held in a gym or yoga studio. Students working through trauma can often become triggered in a typical yoga class either by unexpected touch, specific music, unfamiliar language or even the discomfort at being a novice.
The goal of a trauma-informed yoga practice is to build resiliency and establish greater self-regulation. It works by fostering a relationship between the mind and body to cultivate a sense of safety. This in turn supports stability, positive self-esteem, and a foundation for forging healthy relationships. Trauma-informed yoga uses the knowledge that anxiety, depression, behavioral issues, relationship stress, etc. are often the result of unresolved trauma held in the physical body. A trauma-informed yoga practice is sensitive to the needs of the participant with trauma symptoms and offers tools for students to feel safe, empowered, and self-regulated.
