Welcome to the TIC Education Workgroup

Welcome to the TIC Education Workgroup!  For those that were unable to attend our recent community round table, the Greater LA Task Force is mobilizing through the formation of specific workgroups.  These groups will inform the Task Force’s strategic direction and be the backbone of our boots-on-the-ground action. Round table attendees self-selected into one of the four workgroups. Each group started the process of forming a vision and goals.

The TIC Education Workgroup generated 4 goals. They are listed below in no particular order with details and tactics also suggested at the round table. Some goals got a little more fleshed out than others, and we still may come up with new ideas too. *Note - We’ve added where there may some intersection with the other workgroups.

Goal 1:

Educating the general public (collaboration with Community Action and Engagement Workgroup)

To build awareness of trauma as major public health issue

To normalize/de-stigmatize trauma

To build empathy

Tactics:

Media campaign (ex. public service announcements, engaging entertainment industry to include trauma in film and television narratives)

Community educational events (ex. movie screenings, discussions)

Goal 2:

Educating direct service providers (collaboration with Resource Development Workgroup)

Educators/School personnel/Youth and student services

Complimentary/Alternative modality providers

Health care providers

Goal 3:

Educating leaders (collaboration with Policy Workgroup)

Goal 4:

Creating educational materials

PowerPoints

So where do we go from here? Here’s where we’d like to start:

1. Please introduce yourself by posting a comment below.  Tell us a little about your work and your interests.  If you have a favorite trauma-informed resource, please share. And if you’d like to add another goal beyond the four listed above, do that too!

2. Join this Google spread sheet*:  https://goo.gl/0Fi53f

Make sure your name and contact information is correct. Select the top 2 goals you are interested in working on. List them in order of preference (1=first choice, 2=second choice). We are hoping to have enough people to field a subgroup for all four goals. But if we don’t, then we can narrow our focus to the most commonly chosen goals.

*Note - If you don’t feel comfortable with your contact information being shared in this format, please remove yourself from the list (but do stay in contact with us here on ACEs Connection). Also please respect that this list is ONLY for use related to this TIC Task Force.

As we see who is available to work in which areas, we can mutually decide on our next steps.  We look forward to co-creating a vibrant and productive process with you.

Warmly,

Nkem Ndefo

First, I want to express appreciate for those that have taken the time to comment here.  I also am seeing folks adding themselves to our Google spreadsheet.  Please take a moment to comment here as well, so we can all get to know each other a little better.

Then I'm due for my own introduction: Originally a Nurse-Midwife, I have had a solo holistic health private practice in Northeast LA for the last 10 years or so.  I am always interested in the deepest root causes of disease, dysfunction, and suffering.  This pursuit has moved me further and further upstream.  So 3 years ago, I founded an organization that uses an integrated somatic movement and mindfulness practice for community trauma healing (www.trelosangeles.com).  I am particularly interested in integrating this level of healing into organizational cultures, anchoring first with top administrators/managers and front line workers (teachers, first responders, mental health professionals, medical professionals, etc).

I look forward to hearing from more folks and then getting together to get this ball rolling here in LA!

Hello All!

Thank you for sharing the goals of the Education work group for the LA TIC Task Force. I am a clinical and forensic psychologist, & P21 educator, and certified in EMDR trauma treatment. As the creator of Educational Trauma, I've published about it in the academic literature and lay media. Here is a recent publication on Educational Trauma. It would be an honor to assist in creating goals for educating leaders, affecting policy, and creating educational materials.

I'm a Marriage and Family Therapist. I work in a Special Education High School for children who qualify for special ed. with "Emotional Disturbance". Our students come from regular education sites, where many red flags and warning signs might have gone unnoticed for years. More then 50% of our students have severe trauma in their history. I believe it is highly important for teachers and support staff at all levels of education to understand trauma, it's warning signs and it's effects. As well as, to create support systems in schools that include therapy, education and destigmatization programs for children. For our TIC Education Workgroup I am most interested in working on the goals of A) working to educate and inform teachers/staff/schools about trauma and TIC and B) destigmatizing trauma.

I'm so excited for our Workgroup and I can't wait to begin this important work on a larger scale!

I'm a pediatrician who is interested in provider education around ACEs and resilience as well as assessment of ACEs in clinical settings in combination with screening for social needs. I recently came across a great set of education modules provided by the American Academy of Pediatrics, from the Early Brain and Child Development Section, which can be found here: https://www.aap.org/en-us/advo...ducationModules.aspx

Looking forward to working with you all!
