Bringing Baby Home Educator Training

Carolyn Curtis ·
Bringing Baby Home Facilitator Training comes to Santa Ana, November 14-15, 2019. Research continues to show that our children are most fragile in the first years of their life. Even the strongest relationships are strained during the transition to parenthood. Lack of sleep, never-ending housework and new fiscal concerns can lead to profound stress and a decline in marital satisfaction – all of which affect baby’s care. Not surprisingly, 67% of new parents experience conflict, disappointment...

Closing the Empathy Gap in Education

Dr. Lee-Anne Gray ·
In the Hechinger Report, Amanda Wahlstedt wrote about the empathy gap she experienced as a poor student with a disconnected privileged teacher. She wrote: As a young girl in rural southeastern Kentucky, I remember distinctly hearing my teacher talk about “first of the month-ers,” or people who were out and in the grocery stores at the first of the month, typically with shopping “buggies” overloaded with preserved food. When I looked around the classroom I noticed many of my friends either...

Prevention--Teaching people how to build healthy families

Carolyn Curtis ·
Building healthy families is key to reducing ACEs. A friend of mine recently referred her grandchild and his pregnant wife to a Bringing Baby Home class, because she noticed that the wife had a background of abuse and at times had difficulty functioning. What the grandmother noticed with this couple was a change in the family dynamics following taking a Bringing Baby Home class. The couple learned how to get along, the father is more engaged in parenting, and the baby thriving. This is...

I'm a Marriage and Family Therapist. I work in a Special Education High School for children who qualify for special ed. with "Emotional Disturbance". Our students come from regular education sites, where many red flags and warning signs might have gone unnoticed for years. More then 50% of our students have severe trauma in their history. I believe it is highly important for teachers and support staff at all levels of education to understand trauma, it's warning signs and it's effects. As...

Today at 9:23 AM Hello Nkem - I'm sorry if I didn't quite understand how to respond this invitation. I did enter requested info into spreadsheet. My work has focused on the impact of trauma on Transition Age Youth (TAY). I believe traumatic experiences are under-reported, under-recognized and under-treated (and over-treated w/ psychotropics). I recently wrote a blog that reflects some of my views - What if ACEs (Adverse Childhood Events) Were the Basis of Mental Health Treatment? - Mad In...
