Reported cases of suspected child neglect or abuse in Marin have decreased during the COVID-19 pandemic, but county health officials doubt that is because of improved treatment of children.
“The isolation caused by school closures, fewer mandated reporters placing eyes on children, have put children even more at risk for not getting the help they need if they are abused or neglected,” Benita McClarin, director of the Marin County Department of Health and Human Services, told the Board of Supervisors on Tuesday.
Mandated reporters are teachers, police officers, child care workers and others who work regularly with children. They are required by law to report mistreatment if they suspect it is happening.
