My thinking about the nature vs. nurture debate was jolted Monday during a meeting at The Family Center on Thompson Lane, where I received a thorough primer on adverse childhood experiences, which have received steadily increasing attention as essential determinants for adult success and long-term mental and physical health.
In a Sunday front-page article, Tennessean reporter Anita Wadhwani wrote about the work that state agencies are doing to understand and respond to the root causes of βtoxic stressβ in children, and about the effort a new Memphis-based nonprofit, ACE Awareness Foundation, is spearheading to make Tennessee the national model for combating the generational impacts that these adverse experiences in childhood cause.
