TIHCER August 2024 - Innovations in Trauma-Informed Care

The National Collaborative on Trauma-Informed Health Care, Education and Research (TIHCER) presents:

#1 - Primary Care as a Protective Factor: A Vision to Transform Health Care Delivery and Overcome Disparities in Health

This commentary offers a vision of primary care as a protective factor that can transform the experience of care for both patients and practitioners, improve health outcomes and health equity, and contribute to efforts to rebuild the foundation of primary care in America

Edward Machtinger, MD Professor of Medicine,  Director of the Women’s HIV Program and the Center to Advance Trauma-informed Health Care at the University of California, San Francisco. In his research, Dr. Machtinger focuses on developing practical models of trauma-informed primary care that can be replicated by clinics around the country. He also studies how the high rates of trauma and post-traumatic stress disorder among HIV-positive women can affect successful treatment of both the HIV virus and the whole person living with it. He is particularly interested in the healing power of reducing isolation through various types of group trauma interventions.

#2 - Toward Integration of Trauma, Resilience, and Equity Theory and Practice: A Narrative Review and Call for Consilience

Investigating the roots of health and illness has inspired unprecedented growth in research on trauma and adversity across academic and scientific disciplines. This research reveals how experiences are a cause, catalyst, and key ingredient of health or of illness, disability, and disparities. The review proposes steps toward a unified paradigm and showcases innovative integrated models and applications. These examples provide a more comprehensive and nuanced understanding and lead to more effective solutions. Recognition of consilience can connect multidimensional insights on trauma, resilience, and equity to spark further cross-sector innovations toward health, prevention, and justice.
