TIHCER July Zoom - Med Students TIC Survey AND Leading Organizations to Trauma-Informed Resilience

We are continuing our series of presentations based on the articles published in our Special Section on TIC in The Permanente Journal : https://www.thepermanentejournal.org/collection-trauma-informed-healthcare

This month we have two great presentations!

#1 - Medical Students’ Knowledge, Attitudes Toward, and Identification of Adverse Childhood Experiences and Trauma-Informed Care

Professionals from across the health disciplines are tasked with incorporating a trauma-informed care (TIC) perspective into their work. An integral part of this process is helping students within the health disciplines to understand the associations between childhood adversity and negative impacts on physical and mental health in order to best prepare them for their role in TIC. The paper presented investigated medical students knowledge, attitudes toward and identification of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and TIC.  The presentation will focus on the use of a novel methodology to investigate identification of ACEs and a discussion of the results of the study.

Presenter: Dr. Rachel Piszczor is an Associate Professor in the Department of Behavioral Sciences, at Midwestern University (MWU), Downers Grove. Her background is in child and adolescent practice, training and teaching, with a subspecialty in pediatric health psychology. Throughout her career Dr. Piszczor has worked with children who face a number of different childhood adversities, and has worked clinically with children and families in interdisciplinary settings. She currently teaches within the Clinical Psychology program at MWU and guest lectures within the Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine Department as well as many of the University’s other allied health professions programs.

#2 - Leading Organizations from Burnout to Trauma-Informed Resilience: A Vital Paradigm Shift

Trauma-informed care (TIC) is a growing social and academic movement, and a “vital paradigm shift,” aimed at treating patients with a history of trauma. As a therapeutic approach, TIC provides invaluable instruction on how to promote healing of fractured communities. In addition, TIC has the potential to fundamentally guide us in the development of robust and well-regulated institutions. Ultimately, TIC empowers leaders who center these values to approach the practice and policies of healthcare in ways that can establish and maintain a healthy milieu, rebuild a dedicated and resilient workforce, and provide the requisite care to individuals that honors their dignity and basic human rights. Our goal for this article is to provide healthcare leaders with the nomenclature and skills they need to implement TIC in their organizations.

Presenter: Sadie Elisseou, MD (she/her) is a primary care physician in the Boston VA healthcare system, a Clinical Instructor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School and Adjunct Instructor of Medicine at Boston University School of Medicine, and an internationally recognized expert in the field of trauma-informed care (TIC). Dr. Elisseou's award-winning curriculum is now taught at medical schools across the U.S. She has published novel frameworks for trauma-informed medical education, trauma-informed approaches to burnout, and trauma-informed leadership. Dr. Elisseou is the co-founder of the National Veterans’ Health Administration TIC Collaborative and a member of the Harvard Medical School TIC Steering Committee. She enjoys building platforms to train professionals in trauma-informed resilience.
