Tulsa meeting outcome

This weekend brought 25+ people together in Tulsa to further the discussion around competencies and curriculum development to advance the concept of Trauma-Informed Health Care. A rich discussion ensued with presentations from a number of institutions across the country where various approaches are being considered or have been instituted to integrate these concepts into the healthcare environment.

One of the hoped-for outcomes of the meeting was to begin to develop a working document around competencies for academic medical education settings, but we ran out of time for this. Never-the-less, there was a strong commitment to doing so. Brigid McCaw reminded us of the Core Competencies document published by AVA in 2011. While that document does not use the terminology of “Trauma-informed Care,” it does deal with very similar concerns and recommendations. I think it would behoove all of us to review that document as we move forward. Perhaps we could use that document as a starting point or template for creating a new, contemporary document.

The 2011 AVA document can be found under Resources and Toolkits, or

Thank you, David!  I very much agree with you.  In fact, that is what I was going to promote as the next step.  We need to form a competencies working group and it makes sense to me to review what already exists.  I had hoped that the group would review the AVA document prior to the meeting and some did.  I believe the focus required for going through details of competencies will need to happen within the context of multiple sessions, online and in person, will time for reflection in between.  I do understand the urgency of this as our students want action, as we all do.  I feel a thorough review of the existing competencies - AVA, APA, social work education - along with a review of expanded definitions of TIC and TIC training, not written in the form of competencies, but important to include, should be done as a base for this project.  The time we spent sharing, forming relationships, understanding terms,  and encouraging each other along this complicated path was well spent and forms the base for so much great work in the future.

I will make sure the documents I mentioned above on here on our community site.  I think it works best to store everything here rather than a bunch of emails.  I can't be on the call on Thursday, but please continue the conversation.  This group is amazing!!
