Thanks to Judge Jay Corpening and Dr. Kim Cook who made impactful presentations to the Resiliency Task Force yesterday. Attendees learned about the different initiatives that have moved the needle of the justice system towards being more trauma-informed in the past several years such as the Raise the Age Initiative, the School/Justice Partnership, Misdemeanor Diversion Program, and Juvenile Attendance Council. There is more work to do, but it was exciting to hear about all that has been accomplished and all that is going well now. Dr. Kim Cook provided an introduction to Restorative Justice model, moving the way of thinking about justice from "What did you do wrong and what is the punishment?" to "Who was harmed, and what do they need to feel whole again?" There was a lot of interest in learning more about this model. Her Power Point presentation is available to any who are interested. Please contact Mebane Boyd at for a copy at mebane@ciscapefear.org
Maddy Eversole and Vivian Cook, Volunteers from NHRMC, led an exercise to come up with a creative URL name, and finally, (FINALLY!) the Strategic Plan was shared with the group. (See below for how you can get a copy of the current plan.)
Information about a follow-up meeting after the Historic Trauma and Racism Workshop was presented, with the next quarterly meeting of this group planned for January (1/10/20, 1-3pm, NHC Library downtown). More information about this to come.
