North Coast state Sen. Mike McGuire and First 5 Humboldt County, the Humboldt County Children and Families Commission, are set to host a Eureka town hall meeting Thursday to discuss childhood poverty and adverse experiences.
“It’s going to take all of us working together to solve this crisis happening in our community,” McGuire (D-Healdsburg) said in a statement this week. “This is an important first step and we’re honored to work together in the weeks and months to come for the well-being of our youth and community.”
Speakers at the event include Maryann Hansen, executive director, First 5 Humboldt; Moira Kenney, executive director, First 5 Association of California; Kendra Rogers, managing director of early childhood policy at child advocacy group Children Now; John Sapper, assistant superintendent, Humboldt County Office of Education; Stephanie Weldon, Humboldt County Department of Health & Human Services Deputy Director of Social Services; and Meg Walkley, co-coordinator of the 0-8 Mental Health Collaborative, a group of organizations that have come together to improve the skills of service providers who help children.
