Thanks Amelia, Dr. Perry is a hero of mine. I would love for him to educate all pediatricians too. He understands what happens to the brains of traumatized children!!!

Re: Under One Roof
From Dr. Bruce Perry, MD (Understanding Traumatized and Maltreated Children) Clinical principles for effective work with children have additional critical elements. One is helping the child understand what they feel and why they behave a certain way in given situations. Traumatized children frequently act impulsively and misunderstand why this has happened. They will often explain this (as will the adults around them) as the by-product of them being stupid, insensitive, bad, selfish, sick or...

Unseen Wounds An important study finds that children who have been psychologically maltreated suffer effects that are equal or greater than children who have been physically or sexually abused. This article was published by the folks at the Boston Trauma Center (BVK) late last year and now it is in the APA journal and there are Continuing Education Credits that can be received by reading the article but even without CE credits, this article is excellent and something we should know about. However, asked that if the group hosts other presenters who may be interested to let them know about us. Making a collection of power points that can be used in our rural community to educate folks on ACEs and Toxic Stress. Any ideas of how to spread the word...

We are very excited in Grand Traverse And Leelanau counties to have the use of a "facility" dog to spend time with witnesses, children in court, and families. Someday with Gunther is ready to retire Laurie will adopt him. He is trained specifically to be non-reactive. Most dogs react when threatened or even when a door...

Re: Poverty vs the Developing Brain: 60 Second Know-It-All
CLEVELAND, Ohio - All the anecdotal evidence, at least, suggests that the socio-economic stratum where you begin is the one where you will end. "The implication," Johns Hopkins University sociologist Karl Alexander said in a 2014 interview on the school's web site, "is where you start in life is where you end up in life." Whatever conclusions we may draw about the causes for this, Dr. Alexander's exhaustive study - in which he and his fellow Johns Hopkins researchers tracked almost 800...

Carlene, Did you see the webinar today? I really liked the end with Dr. Gwinn (I am probably spelling his name wrong). I liked the end because it is great to have this information directed at broadened audiences. I think some other members of the group watched the webinar in a group format also which is awesome. This is why I like ACEs connection. When I first went to medical school, I was working on cancer research at the University of Michigan. If you check the cure rates for children's vs...

12 Myths of the Science of ACEs
The two biggest myths about ACEs science are: MYTH #1 — That it’s just about the 10 ACEs in the ACE Study — the CDC-Kaiser Permanente Adverse Childhood Experiences Study . It’s about sooooo much more than that. MYTH #2 — And that it’s just about ACEs…adverse childhood experiences. These two myths are intertwined. The ACE Study issued the first of its 70+ publications in 1998, and for many people it was the lightning bolt, the grand “aha” moment, the unexpected doorway into a blazing new...
