Contrary to myth and taboo, child trauma is common. The Adverse Childhood Experience (ACE) Study showed that 42% of middle class participants had two or more types of ACE childhood traumas, and 66% had at least one. The ACE questionnaire showed that 71% of inner city participants had four or more ACE traumas and 51% had six or more.

A child may not remember trauma, but the body remembers -- all our lives. Childhood trauma produces in adults the top ten causes of death in the U.S. -- including heart disease, lung disease, cancer, liver disease, and diabetes. Exposure to trauma affects children's developing brains. It causes addictions like tobacco, alcohol, and drug abuse.
