Trainings will be free to all admitted into the program.
For those requesting continuing education contact hours, the associated costs will be $75 in total for the entire series (3 NBCC contact hours per session). NBCC is an approved provider for the PA Board of Social Workers, Marriage and Family Therapists and Professional Counselors.  For all others please see if NBCC is an approved provider for your CE needs.

Series Information

Evidence-based, cognitively-oriented trauma treatment can often feel routine and inflexible for providers obligated to work within a cognitive orientation. This 4-part series inspires a creative approach to trauma treatment, supporting providers in community behavioral health, private practice and other child and family-serving settings to ethically employ creative strategies to address and support clients to meet their treatment plan goals. Participants will gain exposure to and practical experience with play-based, art-infused, and narrative strategies. The curriculum must be taken as a whole, so applicants must commit to the 4-part series. Students and novice therapists are welcome to attend, though it is encouraged that attendees have a foundational understanding of the basic components shared by most trauma-focused cognitive protocols.

Session 1: Creative Approaches to Assessment and Engagement in Trauma Treatment
Friday, February 7, 2020 9am-12pm
Jefferson, East Falls Campus (4200 Henry Avenue Philadelphia; exact location TBD) 

Participants will be able to:

1. Describe trauma theory and the theoretical underpinnings of cognitive approaches to trauma treatment
2. Articulate the ethical requirements for practitioners engaging in evidence-based practices with vulnerable clients
3. Observe and demonstrate 3 creative approaches to interviewing children and caregivers to identify trauma exposure and assess symptom severity

 
Participants will be able to:

1. Describe trauma theory and the theoretical underpinnings of cognitive approaches to trauma treatment
2. Articulate the ethical requirements for practitioners engaging in evidence-based practices with vulnerable clients
3. Observe and demonstrate 3 creative approaches to educating children and caregivers about trauma, associated symptoms, and effective treatment

 Session 3: Creative Approaches to Relaxation and Affect Modulation in Trauma Treatment
Friday, April 3, 2020 9am-12pm

Participants will be able to:

1. Describe trauma theory and the theoretical underpinnings of cognitive approaches to trauma treatment
2. Articulate the ethical requirements for practitioners engaging in evidence-based practices with vulnerable clients
3. Observe and demonstrate 3 creative approaches to help clients identify feelings and learn emotion regulation skills

 Session 4: Creative Cognitive Coping Strategies in Trauma Treatment
Friday, May 1, 2020 9am-12pm
Jefferson, East Falls Campus (4200 Henry Avenue Philadelphia; exact location TBD)

1. Describe trauma theory and the theoretical underpinnings of cognitive approaches to trauma treatment
2. Articulate the ethical requirements for practitioners engaging in evidence-based practices with vulnerable clients
3. Observe and demonstrate 3 creative approaches to help clients identify thoughts, feelings, and behaviors for non-trauma and trauma-related scenarios and experiences

Training Faculty

Angelle E. Richardson, Ph.D., is a licensed professional counselor who has a passion for working with individuals and families who have experienced trauma. Dr. Richardson specializes in working with people affected by adoption, foster care, grief and trauma. She strives to provide a safe therapeutic space for them to share and re-author their stores in order for them to heal and grow.

 Dr. Richardson holds a Doctorate in Couple and Family Therapy from Drexel University, a Master’s in Counseling from Rider University, and is trained in Trauma Focused-Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT).

Katharine Wenocur, DSW, is a licensed clinical social worker (LCSW) and registered play therapist (RPT) who specializes in working with children exposed to violence and trauma. Dr. Wenocur strongly believes in the healing power of play, and is passionate about integrating playful interventions into established evidence-based practices.

 Dr. Wenocur is a graduate of the masters and doctoral programs in social work at the University of Pennsylvania, and holds certifications in both Trauma Focused-Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT) and Child and Family Traumatic Stress Intervention (CFTSI).

Rachel Brandoff, PhD, ATR-BC, ATCS, LCAT serves as a consultant on this training series.
