Judge Joan Byer's article, Youthful offenders need help, not berating, which was published in The Hill today, provides a reasoned argument for the inclusion of a trauma-informed juvenile justice system. Byer points out that 92 percent of children involved in the justice system have experienced trauma and asserts that our judicial system must be altered in order to ensure that youth are getting their needs met. It's a great read with an important call to action for Congress to reauthorize the Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention Act.
