JOB ANNOUNCEMENT: Violence Prevention Specialist for CHOP

The Violence Intervention Program (VIP) at The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) is an innovative program that brings the medical home to the patient’s home. VIP establishes a direct and sustainable connection between the hospital and the community through individual and family-directed interventions.  We employ a trauma-informed approach in working with 8-18 year old patients who recently received care in the CHOP Emergency Department (ED) or Trauma Unit for an injury due to interpersonal violence.  The goals of VIP include reducing re-injury and retaliation following violent injury and addressing physical and psychosocial health needs following violence-related trauma.

 We are currently recruiting for the position of a Violence Prevention Specialist (VPS).  The VPS will have either a bachelors’ or masters’ degree in a social work-related field with training in trauma-informed care.  The VPS will receive referrals from the ED and Trauma Unit and identify eligible clients for the Violence Intervention Program.  The VPS will conduct intake assessments with each youth and provide subsequent case management services in their homes, schools, and communities, including connecting youth to community resources and navigation to services such as medical follow-up, substance abuse or mental health treatment, transition back to school, school transfers, housing, recreation activities, legal services/support, after-school program referral, job training and placement, and parenting education and support.  The VPS responsibilities will include regular contact with youth and timely documentation of phone and face-to-face client encounters into applicable database(s).  The VPS will also participate in other programmatic activities as needed, such as developing connections with social and human service entities across the City of Philadelphia, participating in community events, advisory groups or boards, etc., presenting VIP to diverse stakeholders/audiences as appropriate, attending weekly team meetings and case reviews, and participating in research projects associated with the VIP program.  The VPS will receive weekly supervision from the Violence Prevention Supervisor, which will focus on strategies that can facilitate attainment of client goals as well as the professional growth of the VPS.
