Vicarious Trauma and Burnout: Supportive Self-Care Strategies When Working with Clients in Crisis

Exposure to clients’ traumatic experiences can impact child welfare professionals both professionally and personally. Interested in the interrelated dynamics of vicarious trauma, job stress, and burn-out, staff from the Support Center for Child Advocates in Philadelphia, PA developed this curriculum drawing from their own experiences in order to help other professionals working with children and families who have experienced trauma, abuse, and rejection.

The presentation will define and discuss trauma and vicarious trauma within the context of organizational dynamics and systemic issues, and will encourage participants to understand self-care as an integral part of professional ethics and competency.
