Wagner Middle School makes a difference in students’ lives [phillytrib.com]
The best leaders lead by example. At the Gen. Louis Wagner Middle School at 1701 Chelten Ave., students are able to come into their own, succeed in the classroom, and prepare for their future because of the leadership roles and innovative thinking of the administration and teachers at their school. “Some of our goals this school year was continuing to improve our attendance and providing trauma informed training for everyone,” said principal Maya Johnstone. “Last year, we improved our...

Philadelphia’s Homeless Deserve Better. So do SEPTA Police. [philadelphiaweekly.com]
Before that damp and rainy Tuesday night, most of the passengers waiting for their trains at Suburban Station had never met Kenny Solomon. We didn’t know about the car accident that permanently damaged his body, or his recent fall at Suburban Station down an entire flight of steps. We also didn’t know anything positive about Mr. Solomon or his likes and dreams. But his introduction to us, and anyone who happened to be in the vicinity that night was resounding. But the scene that unfolded on...

Re: Philadelphia ACE Task Force Workforce Development Work Group Meeting
I would like to have Strength Based Trauma Informed Leadership Programs included in the resources guide. We are leading the way on integrating trauma informed practices in existing community programs. One example of an intervention we have spearheaded are interactive coping skill cards for children in after school programs. Along with our trainings, teen leadership programs, etc. Thanks for heading such an important group.. All my best, Judy On Fri, Mar 25, 2016 at 9:38 AM, ACEsConnection...

Re: What does a "trauma-informed" Philadelphia look like?
Wow, Shoshana! The very thought of what you propose is thrilling! So do we start top-down or bottom-up? I have mixed feelings and experiences: In my old career of Performance Development and Training I know that top-down is typically ideal to gain traction and pull-through of any new initiative BUT it is fraught with political/bureaucratic snags...in my work with teaching meditation to kids and to Student Assistance Counselors (SACs) I can say that they are where the proverbial "rubber meets...

Re: The Impact of Homelessness on Children and Families
Thank you for your comment, Tina - yes, aren't these a great series? As part of creating a safe learning space in these interactive workshops, participants engage in reflective opportunities with each other and the Course Trainer as part of the process, so they are not video taped. Glad you asked the question!

Well thanks. Group learning is an awesome way to gain more. I wonder if we could build a team to provide similar learning experiences for our folks in Michigan? I think we can maybe with a little assistance and a lot of passion. Thanks
