Sleep is necessary to thrive on a day-to-day basis. I have researched the basis of what sleeping patterns truly mean and how they correlate to individual personality traits. There are six distinctive sleeping patterns that individuals conform to. The initial position is the fetal position, in which individuals lay on their side in a curved position. This position is widely known to most sleepers, and reveals an extensive emotional state of anxiousness (Summers & Bagot as cited in The Sleep Foundation, 2023). Summers and Bagot (2023), reveal that most individuals who sleep in a fetal position have increased body mass index (BMI), and are over the age of 60. The next sleeping position is the Log position, in which the individualβs body is positioned vertically, with arms and legs slightly parallel. This position reveals an individual is personable, and shares comfort in communicating with others. The Yearner sleeping position is displayed when one is in a log position, but their limbs are extended. The Yearner reveals the sleeper is apprehensive and careful about social relationships (The Sleeping Charity, 2023). The Soldier is a sleeping position in which an individual extends all four of their limbs on their sides while sleeping. The Soldier is associated with an increased chance of developing acid reflux, and is associated with personality traits that are least sociable. The Starfish is another popular sleeping position in which the individual lays flat on their backs while arms and legs are extended. It is associated with increased confidence, and friendships (The Sleeping Charity, 2023). The last position is the Freefall position, in which an individual is positioned onto their stomach, with hands grasping their pillow. This position is least popular, and reveals an individual is sociable, and somewhat anxious. Lastly, the Freefall position is more suitable for improved digestion and breathing (The Sleeping Charity, 2023).
