Helping Families Stay Regulated during a Pandemic

As our communities struggle to do what is needed to keep people safe and families work to find a new a “normal” while caring for and educating children at home full time – it can be a lot to handle. Child psychologist and trauma expert, Dr. Bruce Perry offered 8 tips for helping children stay regulated in this recent article from Psychology Today. Dr. Perry was also a part of this video resource for parents, Staying sane while Parenting with Shelter-in-Place!

For service providers who would like to hear more detailed discussions about these and other concepts related to trauma and self-regulation, Dr. Perry is producing the COVID-19 Stress, Distress, and Trauma Video Series and holds regular “office hours” on a variety of topics.

Remember, if you or someone you know is feeling overwhelmingly stressed, please reach out for help. Kansas has a Parent Helpline that is available 24/7 by phone, email, and they even have a free mobile app! You can also reach out to the Community Mental Health Center in your area. We have included a link to the directory here.

If you have ideas you would like to share with others, please feel free to post them on this page or send them to me at vanessa.lohf@wichita.edu and I’ll post them for you.

Please continue to take care of yourself and each other. #StayatHome #PhysicallyDistantEmotionallyClose
