7 Pointers for Setting Boundaries When You’re A True-Blue People Pleaser [psychcentral.com]

Alicia Doktor ·
When you’re a people pleaser, setting boundaries can feel painful. We worry we’ll hurt someone’s feelings. We fear we’ll fracture the relationship. We think saying no is rude or cruel or not compassionate—and we see ourselves as the opposite of these things. And we simply don’t have much practice with setting boundaries. And so, it’s so much easier to simply not set them. It’s so much easier to stay quiet. But it’s certainly not healthier. Many view boundaries as walls. But, according to...

Emotional Fitness: 3 Essential Habits for Better Mental Health [medium.com]

Alicia Doktor ·
Emotional Fitness is the simple idea that our minds need regular exercise and training just as much as our bodies do in order to stay healthy and fit. Consider the following: Have you ever wished you could handle stress with a little more grace and a little less anxiety ? Do you frequently get the sense that your most important relationships would be stronger and more satisfying if you could get a better handle on your own emotional struggles? Or maybe you are about to enter a new phase of...

Healing from Codependency and the Freedom that Awaits

Shirley Davis ·
There is no healing without recognition of that which needs to be healed. Someone who has clogged arteries cannot heal those clogged arteries if they are unaware they have clogged arteries. To heal mentally, emotionally, spiritually, physically, or cognitively first requires an acknowledgment of some kind of deficit or wound. In order to acknowledge a wound one must become conscious or self-aware of such wound.

Strangers, Sidewalks and Folding Chairs are One Solution for the Loneliness Epidemic [NationSwell]

By Monica Humphries, NationSwell, November 6, 2019 SIDEWALK TALK IS A MOVEMENT TO UNITE STRANGERS AND COMBAT LONELINESS. IT ALL STARTS WITH TALKING TO A STRANGER. Psychotherapist Traci Ruble believes that everybody — even folks with close-knit friends and family — gets lonely. It can happen anytime, and it doesn’t only happen when you’re alone. You might have felt it at a party with friends; or on a crowded subway watching strangers on their phones; or while you’re spending time with your...

Psychotherapist Traci Ruble believes that everybody — even folks with close-knit friends and family — gets lonely. It can happen anytime, and it doesn’t only happen when you’re alone. You might have felt it at a party with friends; or on a crowded subway watching strangers on their phones; or while you’re spending time with your partner. But Ruble thinks she’s found a simple way to make us feel less isolated and more connected. It starts by doing the exact opposite of what your parents...

Re: Preparing and Advocating for Medical Care as a Trauma Survivor

Diane Petrella ·
Lara... This is great article and thorough in addressing the issues sexual abuse survivors face with their medical needs. I'm a psychotherapist with an expertise in childhood sexual abuse and have seen first-hand the anxieties survivors face anticipating medical appointments. I've helped survivors with this by teaching relaxation and visualization techniques to use during exams. You're right that their trauma-based fears and anxiety keep many from getting the preventive care and other...

Therapist: Trauma Is An Experience Of The Body. And We're All Feeling It [wbur.org]

By Elissa Tosi, WBUR, May 14, 2020 As a psychotherapist, my work is all about connection. It’s about supporting my clients by cultivating an understanding of who they are and where they’ve been. But therapists are people, too, and we have our own issues. We fight with our partners, apologize to our kids for bad parenting moments, get sick, lose loved ones, the list goes on. We often have to put our stuff aside in order to focus on the client’s reality, and our ability to do that is a skill...

Resilience Is the Goal of Governments and Employers Who Expect People to Endure Crisis [teenvogue.com]

Laura Pinhey ·
John F. Kennedy once told an Indiana audience that “when written in Chinese,” the word “crisis” contains the characters for “emergency” and “opportunity.” It doesn’t . But ever since that 1959 speech, politicians and motivational speakers have invoked Kennedy’s mistaken language tutorial to talk about the importance of persistence, creativity, and, these days, that favorite buzzword, resilience. Resilience is everywhere, its popularity cresting with the setbacks that afflict us: climate...

We are living in complicated and stressful times. What needs to be healed seems more palpable than ever. It feels like the call to release what no longer serves has never been louder and we are feeling that tug at our core. While the founder of The League of Extraordinary People, Alfred White, has been gaining more clarity everyday on this, he was invited to be part of an event, more like a movement, to help others find freedom from what has been holding them back. It is a free, online...

How Seattle Therapists Make Space for Black, Indigenous, and People of Color [southseattleemerald.com]

By Suhani Dalal, South Seattle Emerald, November 11, 2020 Since the start of the global pandemic, one Seattle therapist said that roughly 90% of her new clients are Black, Indigenous, or People of Color (BIPOC), compared to before, when about 70% were white. “There are so many people coming into therapy for their first time — first in their family, first in their history,” said Asian American psychotherapist and codependency therapist Ivy Kwong . “I always tell them: ‘I’m so grateful you’re...

Re: Why It's So Hard to Talk About Abusive Mothers [themighty.com]

Diane Petrella ·
This is a great article. Thank you, Laura. I completely agree with this. Early in my career as a psychotherapist, I worked with abused children, adult survivors and male and female perpetrators. Some of these children and adults had mothers who did unspeakable things to them. There is a double standard. From my experience, it seemed easier for authorities to believe children who disclosed abuse by men then to believe children who alleged abuse by women. But I heard the stories. Contrary to...

Re: Why It's So Hard to Talk About Abusive Mothers [themighty.com]

Laura Pinhey ·
As a survivor, for most of my life that double standard held me back from acknowledging my mother's role in my traumatization. And, yes, I suspect her behavior was/is a result of being traumatized herself. But denying that she's capable of exactly what she did only delayed my own healing. It was when I was able to finally break through that barrier (and that breaking through is a process that I still struggle with, because pointing the finger at one's mother is TABOO) that I was able to make...

So many people are struggling with unhealed, hidden wounds from toxic childhood stress. For some the pain is obvious. Others might look outwardly strong, capable, and in control. However, unhealed inner wounds cause needless suffering and can lead to a dizzying array of psychological, medical, and functional problems. This three-part blog discusses the road to recovery. Part I explained “The Principles of Healing.” This part explains why traditional treatments are not usually the best...

The Method For Receiving Infinite Support and The Power of Gratitude and Appreciation

Bob Lancer ·
Those who struggle with ACE’s have a tendency to focus on the negative as a means of self-protection. We fear opening our hearts because of the brutality we experienced in early childhood when our hearts were already open. It takes a tremendous amount of inner work to free our energy from continuing to produce the false barrier of protection, which constitutes our barrier to experiencing all of the love and joy and support that we long for. In this article I offer an alternative view that...
