When Things Get Out of Hand: Trauma and the Triune Brain [goodtherapy.org]
In recent decades, neuroscience and psychotherapy have joined forces in seeking to understand the biological bases of behavior. The brain is a complex organ, and as we study its function and adaptations we create a window of understanding into how our brains, bodies, and psyches respond to traumatic stimuli. Have you ever heard of the triune brain? This is a simplified, three-part model of the brain, as originally explained by Dr. Daniel Siegel , that helps us to understand the neurological...

4 Techniques Used Around The World To Heal Trauma [mindbodygreen.com]
As a psychiatrist who has worked with psychological trauma for more than 20 years, I have seen and heard stories of violence, genocide, abuse, and loss from many places around the world. The nonprofit organization I founded and direct, The Center for Mind-Body Medicine (CMBM) , teaches tools of self-care and group support...

Congratulations, Daniel, on getting sober. And congratulations on overcoming your fears in order to get into recovery. One of the most inspiring parts of your story is what you say about the fact that some of the things about recovery that you feared most turned out to be not as bad as you'd imagined, and that when you did what you were supposed to do in order to recover, you were rewarded with feeling better. So good to know that you're proud of yourself and learned to love yourself and...

Yes, that is a good one! Like the author of this article, I've worked with trauma survivors for decades. I use all of the techniques he mentions—imagery, movement, belly breathing, drawing—but it's always helpful to learn the new and creative ways people are using these techniques. That's the beauty of mind/body approaches. Once you know the basics, you can use these in so many creative ways specific to the needs of the client population. Thanks again, Laura, for sharing it!

I sat still for a moment, a moment that allowed me to take a breath in relative silence. Silence, sitting in that driver’s seat, had a particular sound. It encroached after relays clicked and vent fans stopped. The engine crackled while cooling. Still hanging from the ignition, keys on the ring touched once or twice, singing their acknowledgement that their cohort completed the...
