From Compassion Fatigue to Healing Centered Engagement: Turning Trauma Informed Values into Action

Lynn Eikenberry ·
To pave the way for a truly strengths-based approach to full healing and recovery for both service users and burned out staff, we must educate them on (1) the central role of primal body responses to trauma (past and present), and (2) the early development of adaptive thoughts and behaviors in response to traumatic experience.

Helping Someone with PTSD: Helping a Loved One While Taking Care of Yourself (www.helpguide.org/)

Alfredo Leano ·
"PTSD can take a heavy toll on relationships. It can be hard to understand your loved one’s behavior—why they are less affectionate and more volatile. You may feel like you’re walking on eggshells or living with a stranger. You may have to take on a bigger share of household tasks, deal with the frustration of a loved one who won’t open up, or even deal with anger or disturbing behavior. The symptoms of PTSD can also lead to job loss, substance abuse, and other problems that affect the whole...

SOLVITUR AMBULANDO - THIS LATIN PHRASE WILL CHANGE THE WAY YOU MANAGE PROBLEMS [Quartzy]

Gail Kennedy ·
From Quartzy, By Ephrat Livni May 25, 2019 All the conveniences of postmodern life don’t seem to be relaxing us. Pop songs are increasingly about anxiety and depression . “Burnout” has become the buzzword of 2019 . We’ve all got problems and don’t know how to solve them, though there’s surely never been a time in history when more advice, self-help books, mindfulness apps, and wellness gurus were so widely available to so many people. Maybe the proliferation of advice is one of our issues.

Yoga Transformed Me After Trauma and Sexual Assault [yogajournal.com]

Laura Pinhey ·
Laura's note: This story of sheer determination of transformation of self and community in the face of personal trauma AND systemic racism is breathtaking. Be warned: it may blow you away, as it did me. As a child, Ebony Smith survived sexual assault but didn’t have the tools to cope with the trauma until years later, when she found yoga. Now, she’s bringing the practice to her community, and others in crisis. Exactly 247 people came to practice yoga with me today. Why is that such a big...

Informative article. Aren't we all fortunate that Elaine Smith and her colleagues persevered in the face of skepticism and ridicule when they brought dogs into the nursing home? Thanks, Teri.

Teri Wellbrock ·
My dear friend works in the mortuary science field and informed me that therapy dogs (animals) are now being utilized to help the bereaved at funeral homes (per the request of the family, obviously). I love it that the power of these sweet animals is being recognized as a healing tool in so many arenas.

I don't think there's any place or situation where dogs can't provide healing and comfort (but I'm biased ).

In the execution of duties, professions that support our society with compassion and empathy can face traumatic stress from exposure to the experiences of the people that they are there to support. How Hope is Different from Resilience

Christopher Freeze ·
Hope is different than resilience. It’s better. In the last of my three posts on why hope is different from other positive traits, today I want to talk about resilience. I’ve exhibited a little hubris when it comes to hope. I’ve said it’s better than optimism, self-efficacy, and, now, resilience. I admit I’m a little biased, but I’m confident the science behind Snyder’s Hope Theory is solid. I’m less certain about resilience. The problem with resilience is a lack of uniformity in how it is...
