The Importance of Connecting with Your Inner Child

Hailey Parks ·
When I first started therapy, every time I heard the words "inner child" I wanted to puke. First of all, the only memories I have from my childhood aren't really memories. They are home videos. I have no idea how I felt as a child, and I certainly didn't care to do so. I wanted to put all of that in the past. After all, could my so-called "inner child" really play that big of a role in my life today? Well, as it turns out, she does. Sometimes, my inner child takes over, and I become an...

TIC Take Five: Awe: A healing antidote

Awe: a feeling of reverential respect mixed with fear or wonder. Here's another in a series of "Take Five for self care" posts we're putting on our Lancaster County (PA) ACEs & Resilience Connection page. Ecotherapy and Social Prescribing for Better Mental Health (wakeup-world.com)

How many times have you noticed that your mood improves when you’re outdoors, surrounded by nature? How often have you wrestled with a difficult issue, only to find that the pieces seem to fall into place while you’re taking a walk or sitting on a beach? Many of us instinctively know, and can back up from experience, that being out in nature is good for our mental health. As awareness grows of the need for holistic health solutions, it seems that the medical and scientific establishments are...

How Making Music Can Help Students Cope with Trauma [KQED News]

By Juli Fraga, MindShift Podcast, KQED News, July 15, 2019 Studies about the Ten Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) have shown that most people have experienced one of these traumas in childhood, such as being abused, having a parent who is incarcerated, experiencing homelessness, among others. The trauma one experiences in childhood can affect adult mental and physical health in later years, especially if a person has multiple ACEs. While the harm can have lasting impacts, health...

I Now Suspect the Vagus Nerve Is the Key to Well-being [thecut.com]

Laura Pinhey ·
Laura's Note: I have no research citation to back this up, but I have a hunch that childhood trauma may do a number on the vagus nerve, at least in some of us. Isn't it reassuring to know that we can help stimulate our vagus nerves through simple, free or inexpensive methods such as deep breathing and yoga (both of which get a lot of good press in this community, and for good reason)? It's no panacea, but it's not nothing. Have you ever read something a million times only to one day, for no...

But there was a war inside me. I felt broken, unable to navigate these huge feelings of...

We ask the client to create his/her own images of "happiness" moments or activities or pleasure giving items. This way the image is personal and comes from personal experiences, thus by placing it on the paper as an image it is mirrored back to the brain and is available as resilience booster.
