Crafting Provides Cross-Body Therapy Which Helps Mental Health [blogs.psychcentral.com]

Laura Pinhey ·
I recently had the opportunity to chat with Sharyn of Homespun Dreams about how she uses craft as therapy. She lives with both anxiety and chronic pain. She enjoys crochet, knitting, sewing, tatting, and other crafts, sometimes mixing them together in one project. She also happens to have a nursing degree so she understands the benefits of crafting from both a personal and professional perspective. It was through her that I learned about the idea of crafting as cross-body therapy. What is...

Tell Me Who You Trust the Most

Carol Monaco ·
Imagine that you are being held by someone you love (partner, parent, best friend, someone you once knew, or someone you imagine). You are safe and warm and connected. You feel the soothing of presence - the beating of a primitive language. As you find the rhythms of oneness, you know that all is right. You are protected from whatever unknown lies beyond. Close your eyes and feel the exquisiteness...Now imagine that the exquisiteness fails.

Joyelle, these are great ideas. I love that they are the sorts of things that parents and children can do either together OR alone, especially once the parents have taught the children these strategies and modeled their use. It's so helpful to recognize that for trauma survivors, often when they are feeling stressed it's caused by or exacerbated by an ingrained reaction originating in early trauma, and the key to overcoming that is in the body. Thank you for sharing these ideas here (I was...

I think many people who've experienced childhood trauma would recognize this piece as a heartbreakingly accurate depiction of how trauma's effects play out in a child's daily life. I believe this could also serve to help those who haven't experienced it, and even those who may be skeptical of the depth of childhood trauma's impact, to understand. Thank you, Carol.

Wow. I saw myself in some of that and my little sister (now age 49 and not so little, but my memories flashed to little Katie) in other bits. I am going to share this on my podcast Facebook page. Beautiful. Peace, Teri

Wow, Carol, that was a viscerally accurate description of what most of us survivors of child abuse go through. How to trust? Whom to trust? That gnawing and desperate need for connection wrecks our every interaction in adulthood.

One of the simplest and easiest cross-body exercises is crawling . It is the best mind-body exercise. It requires just a minute, 3 to 4 times a day but it really keeps me fit and has helped me heal my back.

Cheryl, I read your blog post about crawling, and it was so intriguing. I've tried it a few times and have been trying to get into the habit of doing it on a regular basis. It's such a novel way to move around, and if it helps with back trouble, I'm in! --Laura

After My Wife Died I Was Consumed by Both Grief and Paperwork. We Must Work Together to Change the Medical System [time.com]

Carey Sipp ·
By Daniel Jonce Evans, TIME, May 20, 2020 After finding a parking space I stopped and shifted my minivan into park. I sat still for a moment, a moment that allowed me to take a breath in relative silence. Silence, sitting in that driver’s seat, had a particular sound. It encroached after relays clicked and vent fans stopped. The engine crackled while cooling. Still hanging from the ignition, keys on the ring touched once or twice, singing their acknowledgement that their cohort completed the...

Getting Back Up on That Horse: The Struggle for Resilience in 2020

Emily Read Daniels ·
It’s little contested 2020 has been a sh*# show for most every American. It has personally knocked me down countless times. There are so many aspects of this pandemic and 2020 that have challenged my resilience as an individual, a mother, a small-business owner, and a female leader in my field. Despite what people assume, resilience-lacking 2020 hasn’t been a personal failing. Resilience is not a choice. Resilience is not an attitude or a mindset. Resilience is a physiological phenomenon.
