In recent years, a number of high-profile suicide fatalities have received extensive media coverage, and some of us may not be aware that media depictions of suicide fatalities have been shown to cause an increase in suicide fatalities, a phenomenon known as the Werther effect or, more commonly, copycat suicides. To ensure we all have the knowledge and skills to address suicide fatalities and the topic of suicide prevention in a safe and consistent manner, the Riverside County Suicide Prevention Coalition - Safe and Effective Messaging subcommittee will be hosting a workshop for Public Information and Communication Officers to learn best practices when engaging with the media on the topic of suicide.
