Resilient Brunswick County Meeting Minutes - September 18, 2023

Resilient Brunswick County Task Force Meeting

September 18, 2023

MINUTES

The meeting was held via the Teams app.  Attendance list is attached. Meeting began at 1:08 PM.

Training Members at CRM (Community Resilience Model)  Trainers – Amy has reached out to several members – Jonathan, Britainey, and Miranda who have expressed interest in being trained. Amy has the capacity to provide the training but there is a cost. Britainey shared that Brunswick County Schools has approved her becoming a CRM trainer but cannot cover the cost. Jonathan has already coordinated with Amy to start training on November 29, 2023. Miranda was not present at today’s meeting to follow up with her. Judy stated she also had expressed interest in training and would like Amy to reach out to her. Bonnie will follow up with Amy and ask her to touch base with Britainey and Judy about training and the associated costs.

Plans to Train local church volunteers in CRM – Krista has connected with Meg at Seaside United Methodist Church, and they are very interested in having their church volunteers trained. Krista did not broach the subject of them including people from other churches in the southern end of the county at their training event. Krista and Amy will work together to solidify a plan with Seaside United Methodist. Meg had indicated a desire to first attend a CRM Intro so she could be more knowledgeable when approaching her church volunteers about attending a training at the church. She will coordinate this with Amy. Seaside United Methodist would like to see the Resilience film and receive CRM Intro training during their event. The event will take place sometime before the end of January 2024 as Amy has grant funding to cover training costs through that date.

Setting up a Resilient Brunswick County website with domain name – Jonathan will work on the logistics of this later today and follow up with Bonnie. Bonnie will pay for the domain name as long as she is a member of the task force; the cost is minimal annually. Britainey is willing to post items on the website as long as members provide content.

Ability to Provide CEUs for CRM Trainings – Judy reached out to the Board of Nursing and the NC Nursing Association after our last meeting. She is awaiting a response to determine the process and cost for providing CEUs for CRM training we would like to provide to primary care providers, including pediatricians, and to nurses in the future. This will be critical to gaining their participation.

Potential to Apply for Grant Funding – Britainey mentioned there are a number of grants through grants.gov that may help with some funding. She does not believe they are cumbersome applications. If she identifies any specific grants the task force will review them and determine whether or not to pursue them.

Judy reminded the group that Dr. Victoria Soltis from UNC Chapel Hill’s Nursing Program is still very interested in providing funding to support our efforts if we can identify a specific project for her to consider. She is also able to connect nursing students with us as part of a funded project to support the project. She has supported resiliency efforts across the state and is very committed to it. Her nursing program focuses on mental health issues, so the task force is a great fit for her work. The task force will discuss potential projects for funding at our next meeting and then set up a call with Dr. Soltis for a few of us to participate in to explore further.

NC Child Luncheon - Krista mentioned the NC Child Luncheon that she and Bonnie attended that was recently held at the CAM Art Museum in Wilmington. At the event the latest NC Child Data Report was released, and attendees had time at their tables to review and discuss the data and share their thoughts with one another. Krista noted that Sheriff Chism, the newly appointed Brunswick County Sheriff, was in attendance which spoke to his commitment to the youth and resiliency efforts in our region. The event was hosted by the New Hanover County Resiliency Task Force.

Creating a Resiliency Calendar – Bonnie and Amy met a few weeks ago and were brainstorming some ideas for the task force. One idea they came up with was to create a Resiliency Calendar from which the work on the task force would be completed. It would be a calendar that would be developed to offer to the community listings of professionally focused trainings related to ACEs and Resiliency but would also incorporate the talents and expertise of a variety of community members from across the county. It could include CRM training and Resilience film screenings but would also include things like yoga instruction, mindfulness activities, maybe a baking class, woodworking class, writers’ class, etc. This way we could incorporate the skills of those from every corner of the county and all walks of life to help build resiliency resources, activities, and connections among community members. By starting with a few people providing these classes or trainings, the word about resiliency and the task force would spread organically as people become curious about what this is that their neighbor or church member is involved in, and it would further grow our reach and access to community members. The role of the task force would be identifying and reaching out to coordinate these activities and get them on the annual calendar, to help presenters find locations to use, and to help ask for in-kind donations to support the activities of these presenters.  The group was interested in pursuing this format for community outreach and education. Patricia shared information for a group of local authors who have written a series of books focused on resiliency skills who may be interested in this effort. Dena recommended reaching out to Kelly Purcell about offering her sound bath activities as well. At the October meeting, the group will work on identifying potential partners to help with these presentations and discuss how to approach them to garner their support and participation. If someone would commit to sharing their skill twice or three times annually that would be ideal.

Meeting Schedule – the frequency and type of meeting was discussed. It was decided to hold meetings every other month on the 3rd Monday from 1-3 PM and to hold them virtually. Once per quarter we would meet in person for our meeting at a local restaurant for lunch and planning. Bonnie will send out a meeting calendar for October 2023 through June 2024.

Task Force Leadership – Bonnie noted that she has been the Co-Chair, along with Angie Lawrence, however Angie has not attended meetings for a number of months, presumably due to  her work schedule. Bonnie is looking for a new Co-Chair and would like members to consider helping in this regard. Bonnie will follow up at the October meeting to see if anyone is interested in fulfilling this role.

The meeting ended at 2:05 PM.
