Through partnership between Solano Kids Thrive and First 5 Solano, the powerful film Resilience was screened in Vallejo at the John F. Kennedy Library.
Attendees included community members, as well as representatives from a variety of agencies and city and county government. On the event program, participants could read a brief description of the film, as well as view the 10 questions on the Adverse Childhood Experiences Survey.
From the program: "Toxic stress can wreak havoc on the brains and bodies of children, putting them at a greater risk for disease, homelessness, prison time, and early death. Resilience chronicles trailblazers in pediatrics, education, and social welfare who are using cutting-edge science and field-tested therapies to protect children from the insidious effects of toxic stress".
Erin Hannigan, representing District 1 on the Solano Board of Supervisors, facilitated the event. Hannigan introduced the film, and afterward, shared her reflections and commitment toward supporting resilience-building along with her district representatives, Josette Lacey and Michael Wilson, who joined her at the event.
Lisette Estrella-Henderson, the Solano County Superintendent of Schools also attended. Estrella-Henderson served on the discussion panel for the first screening of Resilience in Suisun. Peggy Cohen-Thompson, trustee of the Solano Board of Education, attended the event as well.
After the screening, the audience engaged in discussion about what it would take to make Vallejo a more resilient community, in the ways highlighted in the film. Participants were asked to consider Vallejo's existing strengths; opportunities for improvement; and to reflect on, "What now" as a way to strategize building resilience city-wide.
At each table, a card indicated whether the table would discuss from the perspective of an individual, an organization, or a whole community. During the whole group report back, participants urged continuing to come together as a community, across sectors, in order to make the vision discussed this evening, a reality.
First 5 Solano announced plans to support the county in developing a resilience plan for 2018, with the support of ACEs Connection!
