The Importance of Hydration

Hydration is essential, especially during summer months when the temperature continues to rise. How much water should we be drinking daily? It is estimated that men should drink at least 120 ounces of water daily, while women should consume at least 96 ounces of water daily (Chilu, 2023). Both fresh fruit and vegetables contain a percentage of water as well. Fruits and vegetables that are high in water content include: cucumber, celery, romaine lettuce, watermelon, strawberries, mushrooms, zucchini, and cantaloupe are just a few (Chilu, 2023). The percentage of water required for children and adolescence is: 6 months to 1 years (4-8 ounces daily), 1-2  years (8-32 ounces daily), and 2-5 years (8-40 ounces daily). Individuals who are in need of additional fluids during the summer months include those who have employment and sporting activities outside. Water is essential for our entire body to thrive properly. If one is severely dehydrated, several disorders can occur. They include kidney disorders, periodontitis, seizures, decrease in energy, constipation, arthritis, breathing disorders, aging, and dry skin (Mayo Clinic, 2021). Adults and children need adequate liquids to remain healthy throughout their life cycle.
