Interdisciplinary Research Leaders is a leadership development opportunity for teams of researchers and community partners, including community organizers and advocates. These teams use the power of applied research—informing and supporting critical work being done in communities—to accelerate that work and advance health and equity. Their innovation helps build a Culture of Health, one that enables everyone in America to live longer, healthier lives.
For this second IRL cohort (beginning September 2017), applicant organizations will be represented teams of three that will focus on one of these two research areas:
- Youth development approaches for the prevention of violence and promotion of health
- Community and individual resilience and health
Teams of three people—two researchers and one community partner—who are interested in applying research to build healthier, more equitable communities. Fellows do not need to relocate; they will continue working in their home communities.
- Researchers must have a terminal degree (PhD, MD, DrPH) or a master’s degree with extensive professional experience.
- Community partners can be leaders, organizers, advocates and other community champions.
- As a whole, teams should incorporate a wide range of disciplines.
- Organizations apply and are represented by teams of three people (“fellows”).
- Annual support of $25,000 per person for three years ($75,000 total per team member).
- A three-year leadership development program.
- Mentoring from national leaders in research, community action, health equity, public policy and advocacy.
- Support and a one-time research project grant of up to $125,000 to design and implement a team research project.
