Why Neuroscience, Positive Feedback Are Transformative in Youth Work [youthtoday.org]
I am a long-time advocate for how the power of neuroscience can transform the youth-serving profession. When combined with a commitment to putting the needs of youth first and a sizable dose of courageous leadership, the insights and practical guidance provided by brain research can have remarkable results. A prominent example of the transformational application of this “secret recipe” can be found at the Sacramento County (California) Youth Detention Facility (YDF). In 2010, Sacramento...

Movement-Making in Buncombe County (NC): Opportunity-Based Narrative and Creation Spaces
Mobilizing action can be intimidating. Creating a movement even more so. John Hagel provides the following definition of a movement: “an organized effort mobilizing a large number of independent participants in a grassroots effort to pursue a broad agenda for change.” He indicates that there are two key ingredients in movement making: 1) compelling narratives and 2) fostering creation spaces. In Buncombe County, we are experimenting with both of these notions. Opportunity-based Narrative A...

My addiction and criminal...

Re: Alternatives to 911 for Mental Health Response
I don't know. MH First is a local group in Sacramento that has been providing services for mental health crises on the weekends. It is an all volunteer group. So we (Decarcerate Sacramento and our allies) have been pushing for the city and board of supervisors to fund this program. Both the county and city have looked at CAHOOTS in Eugene, Oregon as a model, but we continue to push that we have folks doing this work right here in our community and we should try to build from what they have...
