In an effort to reduce the homeless population in Victorville, the City Council announced it plans to partner with San Bernardino County to use the former Queen's Motel as a permanent-housing facility.
Victorville Mayor Gloria Garcia said during the annual State of the City address that the city had approached the county to find ways to work together through a unique collaboration to address homelessness. As a result, Victorville is the first city to ask the county to operate a permanent-housing facility for the chronically homeless within city limits.
"San Bernardino County and our nonprofit partners are effectively addressing homelessness, which has declined 34 percent in our county since 2011," said Board of Supervisors Chairman Robert Lovingood. "Recently, the Board of Supervisors approved the purchase of a 61-room motel that will bring stability and a sense of normalcy to the chronically homeless. So I think we are on the right track in finding solutions to this very difficult problem."
