California is failing our kids [SactoBee.com]
California’s economy is the seventh-largest in the world, and home to global industries that have revolutionized our way of life. Yet when it comes to caring for our children, we are failing to provide the essential services they need to thrive and succeed. The facts are disturbing and unacceptable. California ranks 49th among the states for standard of living for kids; roughly half of children are in families in or near poverty; nearly three-fourths of our youngest kids don’t receive health...

Movement-Making in Buncombe County (NC): Opportunity-Based Narrative and Creation Spaces
Mobilizing action can be intimidating. Creating a movement even more so. John Hagel provides the following definition of a movement: “an organized effort mobilizing a large number of independent participants in a grassroots effort to pursue a broad agenda for change.” He indicates that there are two key ingredients in movement making: 1) compelling narratives and 2) fostering creation spaces. In Buncombe County, we are experimenting with both of these notions. Opportunity-based Narrative A...

San Bernardino County first in nation with plan for homeless women (sbsun.com)
The recently released 2017 homeless count combined with academic research has convinced San Bernardino County to become the first county in the United States to treat unaccompanied homeless women as a special population — a focus that homelessness experts expect will dramatically decrease the number living on the streets. Research looking specifically at unaccompanied homeless women is scarce, said Sofia Herrera, Ph.D, director of the Office for Urban Initiatives at Fuller Theological...

Can government policy reduce trauma?
One of the most radical implications of the literature on early childhood trauma is that abuse needs to be eliminated from all of our relationships—with our families, teachers, colleagues, and government . When government leaders create a new policy, they can proceed in a way that dis-empowers constituents, or they can proceed in a way that fosters dialogue and shared decision-making. Ironically, the development and implementation of California’s policy to address childhood trauma provides...

We often say that a trauma-informed approach is less about what you do and more about how you do it. So how in the world do we even begin the work of operationalizing our unders
