Standing alongside church leaders, San Diego Unified officials Friday vowed not to expel students involved in last week’s brawl at Lincoln High School, regardless of the findings of the ongoing criminal investigation — in the name of restorative justice.
Superintendent Cindy Marten said she hopes students facing charges in Juvenile Court over the Feb. 26 fight are back in school Monday. The fight resulted in the injury of a school police officer and a student getting hit with a Taser. Officers also used pepper spray on students.
“There will be no expulsions as a result of what occurred at Lincoln High School,” said Marten at a news conference at St. Stephen’s Church of God. “We stand with our children with love and respect. They need to be in school, where they will get the supports to make up missed time.”
San Diego Unified has worked for years to build a restorative justice system where students — victims and perpetrators — have a hand in deciding punishments for campus offenses while also discussing the impact of the incidents.
