Nearly every seat in the Landmark Theatre in Hillcrest was filled for a screening of Paper Tigers, a documentary that follows six students during a school year at Lincoln High School in Walla Walla, WA, the first trauma-informed high school in the U.S. The October 26, 2015 event was the first time the film was screened in San Diego County, but it won't be the last.
After the screening, City of San Diego Councilmember Marti Emerald welcomed a panel that included County of San Diego Chief of Probation Mack Jenkins, San Diego Unified School District Superintendent Cindy Marten, Cherokee Point Elementary Parent Leader Jose Granados, and Crawford High School Youth Leaders Larissa Galeana, Mey-Ling Lazo, and Edith Okello.
The panel was moderated by Megan Burke, editor and reporter at Speak City Heights.
"We need to be there to be part of the solution," said Emerald. "This is one of the solutions!"
SDUSD Superintendent Cindy Marten had a call to action for every audience member: "Who are the 10 to 15 people that you can tell this story to that haven't yet heard this story?"
Emerald also had a call to action, and invited everyone to ask themselves: "How will I be an agent of change?"
The panel discussion was videoed by CenterScene and is posted on YouTube.
Thank you to The CA Endowment for creating the opportunity to raise awareness with our Paper Tigers screening. Having so many people from across sectors coming together in our county-wide resilience-building movement was inspiring.
The full series of CenterScene's short interviews at the screening are also posted on YouTube.
