SD County ACEs-, Trauma-Informed and Resilience-Building Time Line

PURPOSE: Create a historical narrative of ACEs-, trauma-informed, and resilience building activities for San Diego County.

1975

  • San Diego County Child Abuse Coordinating Council, Child Protection Team, and the Chadwick Center at Rady Children’s Hospital, San Diego established.

 

1979

  • Chadwick Center and City of San Diego contracted to provide medical evaluations for victims of child sexual abuse.

 

1995

  • ACE Study baseline survey conducted by Dr. Vincent Felitti, San Diego Kaiser Permanente Preventative Medicine Department, and Dr. Robert Anda, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

 

2002

  • Chadwick Trauma Counseling Program becomes part of the National Child Traumatic Stress Network (NCTSN).

 

2007

  • San Diego County Commission on Gang Prevention and Intervention established.

2008

  • Dr. Stephanie Covington leads trauma-informed workshop; facilitator Gabriella Grant, director of the California Center of Excellence in Trauma-Informed Care, challenges participants to take active role in integrating trauma-informed practices in San Diego.

2009

  • San Diego Trauma-Informed Guide Team (SD-TIGT) established.

2010

  • SD Trauma-Informed Guide Team develops and implements X training for X number of X.

  • San Diego County Board of Supervisors approves the Health Strategy Agenda: Building Better Health and the Live Well San Diego Initiative established.

  • San Diego City Heights one of fourteen communities awarded the Building Healthy Communities grant from The California Endowment.

 

2011

  • SD Trauma-Informed Guide Team develops core competencies, adapted from the National Council for Community Behavioral Healthcare.

  • San Diego City Heights Cherokee Point Elementary School starts Wellness and Restorative Practice Partnership program (later renamed Cherokee Point Elementary Trauma-Informed Community School).

  • Impact of Violence and Trauma in Our Community: Building Effective Community Solutions Conference hosted by San Diego County HHSA Dept. of Behavioral Health Services, Mental Health Services Act (MHSA) Prevention and Early Intervention (PEI), Riverside County Dept. of Mental Health Prevention and Early Intervention, and the San Diego Trauma-Informed Guide Team (SD-TIGT).

 

2012

  • Chadwick Center awarded Trauma-Informed Systems Project grant from SAHMSA.

  • San Diego County HHSA Child Welfare Dept. first in country to become trauma-informed through Chadwick Center Trauma-Informed Systems Project training.

  • Building Solutions Toolkit published as result of Impact of Violence and Trauma in Our Community: Building Effective Community Solutions Conference.

  • San Diego County awarded Children’s System of Care Council (CSOCC) grant from SAMHSA and the Family Youth Roundtable is established (?).

  • San Diego County Live Well Initiative Trauma-Informed Behavioral Health Assessment conducted by Dawn Griffin, PhD, Associate Professor, Program Director at Alliant International University and HHSA Trauma-Informed Integration Consultant.

  • Commission on Gang Prevention & Intervention held a Trauma Informed Care Conference:  Responding to Community Violence - Impact, Awareness & Empowerment  (October 13, 2012)

 

2013

  • Mayor of San Diego declares May 1, 2013 as Trauma-Informed Care Day. (Proclamation attached.)

 

2014

  • Pilgrim United Church of Christ starts providing Trauma Incident Reduction.
  • San Diego CountyHealth and Human Services director Nick Macchione sends letter to dept. staff on Integration of Trauma-Informed Systems for the Health and Human Services Agency.

  • KPBS article by Megan Burkes features letter from HHSA director Nick Macchione entitled San Diego County Responds To Growing Link Between Childhood Trauma And Health.

  • San Diego County Probation Dept. awarded one of four Positive Youth Justice Initiative (PYJI) grants from Sierra Health Foundation, The California Endowment and The California Wellness Foundation.

    San Diego Unified School District Student Services Dept. offers voluntary trauma training for all staff provided by San Diego Youth Services.

2015: Mobilizing Action for Resilient Communities (MARC) Grant awarded to San Diego (as one of fourteen communities from across the country to now have an opportunity to expand their innovative work in addressing childhood adversity through a new project launched by The Health Federation of Philadelphia, with support from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and The California Endowment.

2015: City of San Diego passes unanimously the Resolution of Support of Trauma Informed Approach -- Dana Brown (ACEs Connection staff) · 8/10/15 9:32 PM On Tuesday, July 28th, 2015, our San Diego City Council Members unanimously passed the Resolution in Support of Trauma Informed Approach to Address and Prevent Gang Violence put forth by the Commission on Gang Prevention & Intervention.
