The federal legislation named after George Floyd was passed by the House earlier this year and is now in the docket of the U.S. Senate. Civil rights leaders argue that without the federal law being passed there are no guarantees that the nation won't once again experience another George Floyd killing in a different city and that lives and taxpayers ultimately won't be protected from the continued epidemic of police shootings of unarmed Black citizens and people of color. The federal legislation would allow for the U.S. Department of Justice's civil rights division to subpoena local police departments, would also ban chokeholds federally, would address racial profiling & limit qualified immunity as a defense to liability in a private civil action against a law enforcement officer. President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris have already committed to signing the federal legislation and have called on the United States Senate to pass it immediately. Leaders across San Diego once again joined civil rights activist Rev. Shane Harris today in requesting that the county Board of Supervisors formally adopt the resolution supporting H.R. 1280 the "George Floyd Justice in Policing Act of 2021" as a public demonstration that the jurisdiction supports the federal bill named after George Floyd. The San Diego Board of Supervisors often supports federal and state legislation through resolutions which expresses where a region stands on a particular issue. Leaders across San Diego have joined civil rights activist Rev. Shane Harris in requesting that the county Board of Supervisors pass a resolution supporting H.R. 1280 the "George Floyd Justice in Policing Act of 2021" as a public demonstration that the jurisdiction supports the federal bill named after George Floyd. San Diego County Supervisor Nathan Fletcher has agreed to agendize the resolution at the supervisors May 4th meeting. Fletcher released this statement last Wednesday evening after Harris and other leaders pushed for the county to take a stance on the federal legislation.
