San Diego Trauma-Informed Guide Team - September 7, 2018 Meeting Minutes

Thanks to all who attended September's meeting!  Its great to see both new and familiar faces:-)  Special thanks to Craig Beswick from Learn4Life for his Trauma-Informed Journey presentation!

Meeting minutes are below and attached.  Handouts and Craig's PowerPoint presentation are attached.

1. Welcome - Introductions (Name and Organization)

3 people Zoomed in😊; Jeff Weiner & Sara Coupass Clinton Health Matters Initiative, and Betsy Knight & Adrianne Yancy BHS. Our apologies for the sound problems.  We believe our planned purchase of a specialized camera/microphone for meeting videos will eliminate this issue.

1. Update on Strategic Plan Accomplishment activity from July 6, 2018 meeting

Linda and Amelia reviewed Strategic Plan activity results from July’s meeting and passed out handout of results (attached). Accomplishments were viewed through the lens of our Strategic Plan goals: 1) Expanding cross-sector inclusion; 2) Promoting resilience and preventing/reducing ACEs; 3) Influencing system change at policy, program and practice levels; 4) Inclusion of family, youth and resident voice.  Rosa Ana suggested we further use these results to think about impact of the Guide Team and how to measure this.  The Leadership Team will discuss next steps for this.

2. 1. Membership Committee Co-Chairs: Stephen Carroll/Linda Ketterer

Two new members were recognized!  First-time attendees were welcomed and offered 1-page orientation sheets if they hadn’t already received one.
      b .  Resources Committee: Co-Chairs Morgan Basket/Cambria Walsh
SD-TIGT (private) Membership Community on ACEs Connection was discussed.  Members are invited (via email) to join this group once they have attended their 2^nd meeting.  They are also invited to complete a member survey, asking about their skills and knowledge, to share with other members as a part of our Membership Directory. This will be used to promote networking among members. The survey link will be sent to new members to populate directory.  The current directory was circulated for members to add any updates and to see if they were included.  Email sdtigt.resource@gmail.com with edits, questions, to join, completing member survey, etc.

Members were also invited to join the monthly Resource Committee meeting.  Other projects in the works on the Members private group: Creating a “meet the leadership” document; posting subcommittee updates, posting PowerPoints from meetings.

1. Training Committee Co-Chair: Melissa Tran-Chamblin – unable to attend

Melissa was unable to attend but she wanted to share about their bi-monthly Professional Learning Activity which occurs in their committee meetings.  Members were also invited to be a Committee Co-Chair and to join monthly Training Committee meeting.  Rosa Ana volunteered to be co-chair and was accepted. 

1. Announcements/Achievements
         a.  Project FORECAST: Audrey Hokoda

Audrey shared about a potential opportunity to participate in Project FORECAST’s training program focused on creating a trauma-informed child-serving workforce.  Their program teaches 12 core concepts of addressing traumatic stress (see attachments).  They want to create learning communities which would include two in-person trainings and several webinars.  Audrey is looking into whether, if we have enough interested participants, they would be willing to do trainings in San Diego.  This is a train-the-trainer model and participants will be required to provide a certain number of trainings per year.  They will first have a free intro webinar which Audrey will post on ACEs Connection. San Diego probation is beginning a program to hire ex-felons as community mentors (after completing a certificate program).  This summit will highlight the program, which is like the Family Support Partner programs.  It is almost sold out and cost is $75.  Information posted on ACEs Connection.

Dana shared about an upcoming conference and ceremony focused on indigenous wisdom, healing and spirituality.  Content will include speakers (such as a keynote by Dr. Vince Felitti) and indigenous healing experiences.  See attached flyer or ACEs posting.  Cost is $150.

Linda shared about this upcoming forum focused on resilience and providing resources.  Flyer attached.

Amelia shared about an upcoming FREE Live Well San Diego event.  What: 2018 Live Well Advance When: Tuesday, October 2nd from 9:00 a.m. – 4:45 p.m. Where: The Marriott Marquis San Diego Marina For more information, visit https://211sandiego.org/live-well-advance-2018  There will be 30 minute breaks between speakers to allow time to go to resource tables. 

The Clinton Initiative (Strong Families, Thriving Communities), focusing on improving the Child Welfare System in San Diego, began in March.  The current San Diego work group is focusing on trauma informed care in SD county and want to have a conversation on how we can collaborate and avoid duplication of efforts.   Dana, Rosa Ana and Linda all participate in the Initiative work group.  Our job is to help them understand the San Diego community and explore ways they might help us.  This is a possible opportunity for us to influence content of training developed/provided by Initiative.  Rosa Ana will report out in Guide Team meetings on what Initiative is doing.

Conference focus is on birth to 5. It is almost full.  Dates: 9/13 – 9/15.  This year’s theme is diversity, TIC and culture.

1. Trauma-Informed Journey Presentation
        a.  Learn4Life: Trauma-Informed Career & Community Schools (TICCS), Vice-President, Craig
             Beswick

Craig gave an informed and passionate description of the Learn4Life program, who they serve, local and national partners, their evolution and trauma informed approaches!  It was a 2-3 year process for their schools to become trauma-informed and they now infuse trauma-informed practices in ALL parts of their programs.  Their strengths-based approach focuses on resilience, restorative practices and positive behavioral supports.  Supports continue after graduation to ensure to success in schools/jobs.  They also have alumni ambassadors – hired graduated students – who do peer-to-peer mentoring and work in internal departments as interns.  See their website (https://www.learn4life.org/) or the attached PowerPoint for additional information.
