The 2023 Bridges to Resilience conference inspired us all to think more deeply about HOPE and how we might increase access to positive experiences for children and youth who have been exposed to high doses of adversity. In this post-pandemic world we recognize that many of our youth are suffering and in need of support.
The November Lunch & Learn hosted by the KIDS Network of Santa Barbara County explored the four building blocks of HOPE from a youth perspective and elevated youth voices to help us understand what matters most.
The session explored the following questions:
• What are the challenges to relationship-building with youth?
• How do we create safety and stability for youth?
• What values or needs are likely to influence youth engagement?
• What types of activities / experiences support emotional growth for youth?
The session began with a video showcasing interviews from youth on the experiences that make them feel connected, included and safe, followed by interactive breakout groups to brainstorm how each building block can contribute to healthy outcomes for youth.
Key takeaways from the breakout sessions emphasized creating a space where students are heard, seen, and valued. Building trust between students and adults results in an organic network that leads to connection, resource sharing, and peer-to-peer support.
“To listen is to lean in, softly, with a willingness to be changed by what we hear.” Mark Nepo
