In its 36th year, the annual Child Abuse Prevention Council Symposium has long been known as an opportunity to hear new ideas, network with colleagues, and return to work with a fresh energy and perspective. Whether this is your first or 36th year in attendance, we look forward to your participation at this year's event.

  • Understanding Interviewing from the Victim's Point of View - Helping Child Abuse Victims Make Sense of their Experiences
None of us chooses to be a victim of crime, and despite what we know about trauma, it can still be hard for professionals to be accepting of victims many struggles. This presentation will address why victims often do not tell about their experiences. If they do, they may not give a full account, and the details may not emerge in a linear style. As interviewers and professional helpers, we need to understand why this happens and how we can adjust our interventions to facilitate healing and obtain whatever disclosure there may be available.

Plenary Session Address by David D. Love, LMFT, Executive Director and Founder of Valley Community Counseling Services, Inc., Member of APSAC, and the state chapter, CAPSAC

  • Assessing and Treating Juveniles with Sexual Behavior Problems
The child abuse treatment field, mental health services, probation services, and schools often identify young people with problematic sexual behaviors. This ranges from sexually abusive preadolescents and sexually inappropriate juveniles to youthful child molesters and rapists. The workshop will separate normal sexual exploration and sexual reactivity from sexual exploitation. It will explain why young people become sex offenders. Treatment strategies for each category of sexual issues in young people will be identified.
