A Happy New Year Message from First 5 Siskiyou Children and Families Commission

Happy New Year! ⭐

1. High Quality Virtual Classes and Trainings for Parents and Professional Development - through continued partnership with Lilliput Family Services, OPEC, College of the Siskiyous Foster/Kinship Care Education program, Siskiyou Human Services - MHSA a menu of high-quality trainings were offered including monthly trainings by Dr. Ernie Mendez and Ce Eshelman, LMFT. Knowledge of parenting and child development is an important protective factor. Through the virtual parenting and professional development classes, more parents and those who work with children and families, grew their knowledge.

2. In partnership with Siskiyou County Office of Education, Siskiyou Health and Human Services, and Lilliput Family Services -- Dr. Deena Graves provided the first ever training on Commercial Sexual Exploitation of Children for youth awareness about possible dangers of technology. Special thanks to Dunsmuir High School for offering the training to the entire high school.

3. Stewards of Children a program by Darkness to Light  - Through partnership with Siskiyou Family YMCA, we provided monthly free virtual classes that teach how to prevent child sexual abuse. Through education, advocacy, and research, Darkness to Light is our national leading advocate for the prevention of child sexual abuse. By learning and working together, we are able to make a bigger impact and keep more kids safe.

4. Adapted and presented the Attachment Vitamin and Strengthening Families Programs to provide parents and caregivers of children with trauma-informed parenting knowledge, and learn new ways to improve communications and strengthen family relationships.

5. Provided parenting classes for Next Step participants through a new partnerships with Siskiyou County Alcohol and Other Drugs department.


6. First 5 Siskiyou accepts invitation to be the Siskiyou Designated Child Abuse Prevention Council. We look forward to expanding our collective efforts to offer more free parenting education classes to increase awareness and to promote the safety of children and teens -- and prevent child abuse and neglect.

7. Home Visitation and Parenting Systems Coordination - Together in partnership with Siskiyou Early Head Start, Shasta Head Start, Modoc Head Start, Siskiyou County Public Health, and funding and support from the Ford Family Foundation, home visitation programs continue to grow partnerships and supports for home-based supportive services.
 
We also coordinated efforts with more than 15 partners and provided over 125 sessions of parenting education classes and enhanced services for the best outcomes for children and families. These partners include Siskiyou County Probation, Siskiyou Superior Court, Siskiyou Health and Human Services, Family and Community Resource Centers, the Ford Family Foundation, and Siskiyou Schools. Parenting Education classes are for all parents, and are free of cost.


8. Distributed thousands of COVID safety supplies through coordination with Family and Community Resource Centers and other providers.

9. Backpacks & Activity Kits - While stay-at-home order was in place, in partnership with Siskiyou County Library, we provided over 1000 Activity Kits to young children to promote at-home learning.

10. Family and Community Resource Centers -  Our key community funded partners provided over 10,300 hours of drop-in concrete support in time of need as well as other programs and activities to strengthen protective factors.


11. Quality Counts Siskiyou - supports early care and education providers with resources and support to continue to grow quality early childhood programs. We supported efforts for feasibility study of rural childcare and worked in partnership with the Happy Camp Community Center and the Siskiyou Childcare Collaborative to support the development of the new Little Campers Childcare in Happy Camp.

12. Our 5th year of Siskiyou being an affiliate to the Dolly Parton Imagination Library. Thanks to our partnership with First 5 California, Delta Kappa Gamma, Siskiyou Community Resource Collaborative, and all of the generous donors -- more than 2,300 Siskiyou children have received free, high-quality, books each month in the mail. We are working to achieve that every young Siskiyou child, from birth to age 5, has free access to a variety of vibrant and age-appropriate books.

13. Dial-A-Story -- A new pre-recorded stories for children program. In partnership with Siskiyou County Library, this ANYTIME story service for children, in English and Spanish, is just a phone call away! To hear a story, call anytime: 1-844-643-1234. New recordings released monthly.

14. Ready4K - Over 600 Siskiyou families with children from birth to 6th grade benefited from this evidence-based parenting education program developed by educational researchers at Stanford University. The curriculum is delivered via text messages and is trauma-informed. Each week families and caregivers receive fun facts and ideas to promote children's development -- and each month amilies have access to a live Family Fun Hour with topics based on research on how to best support families. This approach has been shown to increase child development by 2-3 months over a school year.


15. Read Across Siskiyou - Our 14th annual event was a great success once again thanks to the many volunteer special guest readers, host sites and Family and Community Resource Centers who supported the coordination. The focus of this event is to promote the importance of daily reading with young children.

16. CalFresh -- Through our partnership with Chico State University Center and Family and Community Resource Centers, we continue to help families become aware of CalFresh food benefits (also known as SNAP) and provide program information and application assistance.

17. Welcome Home Baby program provided supportive resources for successful feeding and information and support for healthy child development. Parents of babies born in Siskiyou county receive a free tote bag filled with parenting and health resources, and free books to start their home library.

18. Virtual Breastfeeding support, guidance to care, and questions about all things nursing with Jenna Henson Marshal, RD, IBCLC provided through a partnership with Mercy Medical Center Mt. Shasta, Siskiyou Health and Human Services, OPEC, and the Siskiyou Community Resource Collaborative.


19. Outdoor Playgroups revived family connections and created opportunities for children to learn while they played. Play Groups are filled with interactive and hands-on activities: sensory play, art, songs, stories, music, and cooperative games. Special thanks to all participating families.

20. Apricot 360 - New software to track, support, and grow outcomes. The advanced reporting tools provide richer insights and helps make data-driven decisions and maximizes resources and impact.


21. Website and Social Media - Provided helpful family resources, including the latest COVID updates and information; upcoming training and class details; and a broad array of information of interest to families on the First 5 Siskiyou website and facebook page.
