Often when a child acts out at school they are sentenced to detention or suspension. The Robert W. Coleman Elementary School decided this was no longer going to be the case. Instead of detention this elementary school created the Mindful Moment Room. This room was created for children to go and talk through what had happened and provides them with the space and time to practice breathing and meditation.
Studies have shown that mindful meditation could improve a person’s attention span and focus. I think that this is a wonderful idea in that it allows students to take the time to center themselves. We need to remember that children are coming to school each morning with many potential experiences that may be linked to the frustration and acting out that lands them in detention.
The Robert W. Coleman Elementary School is a great model of school that provided their students with a coping tool that will be useful for them throughout their life. Since the Mindful Moment Room was created there have been zero suspensions. Go Robert W. Coleman Elementary!!
