As young children many of us grew up watching superheroโs in the movies and wishing to one day become one. Here I am living the Dream! Okay, so you wonโt find me in a comic book or in a movie(at least not yet๐) or flying around town saving the world. I am my own superhero, saving myself and making my world a better place to live in.
When I volunteer it helps counteract the effects of stress, anger, and anxiety. All of these are battles I come up against and have to be mindful about how to defeat.
I am a huge people person and it fills my cup to be around others. When I volunteer I develop stronger social networks and friendships. It is a positive social connection for me, a Protective Factor that helps to keep me safe and buffers toxic stress. To this day the friendships I have made through community service are some of my most cherished. To be around others that lift one another up and are truly real life superheroes that are making our community a better place.
Giving back to community gives me a sense of pride, lifts my confidence, and makes me feel happier.
Over the weekend I got to take part in the Apple Blossom parade and while of course being able to dress up(which is kind of my thing) was a HUGE plus, being able to walk with people I admire so very much and look up to as superheroโs that inspire me and are amazing humans that DO so much for our community, and make such a positive impact. Wow, Iโm one of them?! Tears filled my eyes as I walked through the town holding a sign that said โSuperheroโs help mental healthโ little did everyone know it truly was helping mine in that very moment. To wave at the crowd, see the joy on the communities faces, and people cheering us on that is power..our super power you could say. I know that in that moment everyone felt happier.
